Filipino weddings in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland beautifully blend Catholic faith, family centred customs and big, joyful receptions. They are full of meaningful symbolism – from sponsors and veils to coins and money dances – which makes them incredibly rich to photograph and perfect for storytelling coverage over the whole day.

Most traditional Filipino weddings are Catholic, with a full church Mass that includes Scripture readings, a homily, vows, rings and Holy Communion. What makes them distinct are the added roles of ninongs and ninangs (principal sponsors), plus secondary sponsors who participate directly in the candle, veil and cord rituals during the ceremony.
These sponsors are usually close family friends or relatives who continue to support the couple throughout their married life. You can explore more church based ceremonies and how we photograph sacred moments in the

Three of the most recognizable Filipino Catholic wedding traditions are the veil, cord and arras ceremonies. During the veil ritual, sponsors drape a veil over the couple’s shoulders or over the bride’s head and groom’s shoulders, symbolizing unity, protection and being covered by God’s grace.
Next, a cord (often a loop or yugal shaped like a figure eight or large rosary) is gently placed over the couple’s shoulders to represent an unbreakable bond. In the arras ceremony, the groom gives the bride thirteen coins, symbolizing his promise to provide and their shared responsibility for their future. These moments create powerful, quiet images of hands, symbols and expressions that you will see throughout the

gallery.
Many grooms and male family members wear a barong tagalog – a traditional embroidered shirt, often made from piña or similar fabrics – which photographs beautifully alongside modern bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses. The ceremony often also includes a unity candle, where the couple uses two individual candles to light a central candle, symbolizing two lives and families becoming one.
At the reception, you will frequently see a lively money dance where guests pin bills to the couple’s attire while taking turns dancing with them, offering both financial support and blessings. Filipino receptions in Vancouver usually feature generous feasts with dishes like lechon, pancit and seafood, and they often run late into the night – ideal for capturing candid moments and dance floor energy similar to what you will find across the

and other cultural celebration stories.
In Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey and the surrounding cities, Filipino couples often hold the ceremony in a Catholic parish and then move to a separate reception venue like a hotel, community hall or golf course. Many families choose venues that can accommodate larger guest counts, live bands and plenty of space for formal dances, games and performances.
When planning, couples often compare options using resources like the

Filipino weddings tend to be detail rich and schedule packed, so I build a photography plan around the key cultural moments: preparation with family, church processional, veil and cord, arras, sponsors, family blessings, grand entrance and money dance. I also pay close attention to parents and ninongs/ninangs, since their reactions are such an important part of the story.
Off camera lighting and fast lenses help keep photos sharp and vibrant in both dim churches and colourful reception halls. If you are planning a Filipino wedding in Vancouver or anywhere in the Lower Mainland, you can reach out through the

They have packages with two photographers and it allowed us to have our entire wedding shot from different angles. After receiving our wedding photos I found many pictures that I didn’t even know were taken. They are able to take flawless wedding photos without even being known they are there.
