Just shooting in in Downtown Vancouver during snowpocalypse 2019. No big deal!
It's hard to beat a tunnel of lights in the snow! We are getting more and more night portrait session requests and we love it!
Taking a classic spot and adding a twist! what do you think?
Snowy engagement sessions! The mountains are still looking great up top!
Congrats to V+J who were married at The Permanent in Vancouver! This is their first kiss as a married couple! We love when you line up a candid shot and it goes all to plan! This venue required a bit of extra light to really make the couple stand out. I’m glad it all worked out!

I love the way how light makes snow look! We had fun on this snowy mountain engagement on top of a mountain! Snow + Lights + Trees make for some amazing detail!
I've been looking forward to photographing in this location for awhile now. I really love photographing with twinkle lights in low light, and feel it really adds to the photo to give it more interest and create more of a romantic feel. Do you like the look of twinkle lights in photos?
It was calling for a little bit of snow during this day, and when the engagement shoot started, I got a notification of a snowfall warning in Vancouver. So 2cm turned into 15cm of snow that evening. This is probably one of the snowiest engagement shoots we have ever done. So when the snow started, we waterproofed our flashes, and Lauren had to stand over me with an umbrella to protect the camera while we continued on with our photo shoot. In this shot, I put 2 flashes behind the couple to the left and right of them to light up the millions of snowflakes.
It was snowing pretty hard in Vancouver for this Valentine's Day engagement shoot, so we took a break from the snow to this covered staircase to play with some reflections.
We have tried to use these trails before on Grouse Mountain, but due to weather and high winds it never happened, until now! We scheduled this engagement shoot to be a little later in the evening so we could make sure to get some really dramatic photos with the lights in the trees. Would you brave the winter cold for a snowy engagement session?
Well this is a first for me. We found an igloo along the trails up on Grouse Mountain for this engagement shoot, so we all piled in to get this shot. It wasn't the easiest for a guy who is 6'4 to climb into this small of a space but I did it, and it made for some fun photos!
Who doesn't love wood burning fires? This winter has been feeling especially cold this year, and cozying up by the fire is exactly what everyone needs right now until Spring finally arrives.

Back down to snowy downtown. Lucky to have a photo like this as it only happens a few times a year. I have to say I love the low light capabilites of the new cameras. A few years ago this shot would have been much harder to get - Finally the flashes and cameras have cought up to how I invision my photography. Anyone else have a crush on new camera gear?
I am going to try and publish all the snow photos before everyone gets into spring / summer mode. Snow photos are pretty fun though, right?
Winter engagement sessions are the best. You have all the prettiest spots to yourselves!
It was one of those magical nights where big fluffy snowflakes come down right into the city. As all the bad Vancouver drivers hit each other on the city streets, we had a nice calm area along the seawall! Night + Snow make for some amazing photos!
Taking the sun rays in before the ceremony (check the full gallery using the link in bio)! We try and not have too many expectations going into a wedding. We love seeing how the story unfolds and how each area looks on the day of. The bride was waiting for the ceremony to start in a little room off to the side of the church. Some beautiful sun light came into the windows and I grabbed this photo. Light is the most fun thing to play with in the world!

When Downtown Vancouver looks like a ski resort! We have been getting lucky enough to do a few snowy engagements this month! Anyone else loving this snow?!
Keeping warm inside with the winter vibes! N+I’s church for their ceremony had a shiny new upgrade that included some pretty funky projected lights. I used a flash to bring out the couple and balance the photo with the projected light! I will be teaching this on my upcoming video workshop.
The time has finally come where the Lower Mainland has turned into a winter wonderland! What’s your favourite thing to do in all this snow?
While I love shooting outdoors as much as possible - Indoor photos create a really interesting look and it's fun and easy to play with light. Any favourite locations?

I feel like this was the perfect combo for this location: The amount of bridesmaids evenly spaced along the doors, along with their dresses perfectly complimenting the colours of this building...it just all comes together in a very satisfying way. Don’t you agree?
I took this kind of boring location which was essentially two concrete walls and tried to make something cool. I will be teaching how to create similar images in our upcoming video workshop series. Follow for updates.
I had checked out this location a bunch of times, but it is not really close to too many wedding venues, or it's too busy during peak summer months, or was always pouring rain if we were close. Well, we finally got to shoot here and I am pretty happy with how it turned out. Do you like how the red dress pops with the blue mountains?
We love doing night photos! A lot of clients ask if we are able to shoot in the dark. I actually find it easier sometimes because you don’t have to worry as much about the ambient light. Our night photos are almost always the last photo of the night. I feel like it always ends off the couple's wedding story with a nice photo of them because we are already in the groove, the couple is relaxed and it all works out nicely. Would you take photos at night?
www.willpursell.com | How about this spot for wedding party photos!? There's something special about sunny snow capped mountains where the snow doesn’t quite touch the bottom. Especially when its warm enough for only dresses! I’m not sure about everyone else in the Vancouver area but keeping the snow in the mountains where we can GO TO THE SNOW is why we moved out west. What do you think? Would you rather keep the snow only in the mountain? Living only in the snow during winter? or never experiencing winter at all??
www.willpursell.com | Despite being a fairly new city, Vancouver has some pretty spectacular heritage buildings! This wedding ceremony was at Holy Rosary in downtown Vancouver. It was a rainy winter wedding so after the ceremony we quickly ran out and got some pretty epic rain photos using the outside of the building!
www.willpursell.com | That light! We were lucky enough to get natures haze aka fog for this engagement shoot! For those of you who don’t know, fog makes light look amazing! Anytime you get fog, then just use some sort of back light and you will be in for a treat! Would you go out and get photos in the fog?
www.willpursell.com | Shooting at the Vancouver Club is always a treat. With dark and romantic venues we always love trying to keep the ambience of the room. Using our off camera lighting, we are able to make the couple pop while keeping detail in the photo. What's your favourite venue?
www.willpursell.com | Can you believe this is the lobby to the couple's condo?! I love walking into new locations and seeing how I can shoot it in the most interesting way!
www.willpursell.com | When you plan an outdoor ceremony for the middle of February, you really hope it works out. This outdoor ceremony was on the deck at Fraser River Lodge overlooking the epic Mount Cheam mountain range. The forecast was calling for rain in the valley 2 weeks straight leading up to their wedding, and the forecast on the day of their wedding was changing by the hour. Luckily, on their wedding day, it turned out sunny and beautiful, with an epic view of some fresh snow capped mountains as their ceremony backdrop! It’s days like this that we are so happy to be in the Lower Mainland!
www.willpursell.com | Do you see the silhouette? We are always looking for interesting items to use when we walk into a room. This cool clock caught my eye right away and ended up being a very special item to the couple. I used the reflection off the glass on the clock, and also put a flash behind the couple against the wall on the other side of the room to make a silhouette. What do you think? Do you like these types of creative reflection photos?
www.willpursell.com | The couple got “Just Married” in style with this classic convertible dragging cans. We drove down the busy streets of Vancouver as hundreds of pedestrians clapped and waved at the newly married couple. We even went though the McDonalds drive thru for a quick snack. What is your favourite mode of transportation for a wedding?
I hope everyone had an amazing weekend! Lower mainland is finally starting to feel like winter with temperatures in the negatives for the first time this year (sorry rest of Canada). I figured I would showcase a nice warm indoor photo from the Vancouver Art Gallery. This location has a nice light and airy look to it and is a great option for indoor photos. The bride had an amazing long veil she wanted showcased in her photos. Lauren has mastered throwing the veil now and used her skills to make the shot a bit more epic. I used a one light setup at the back of the gallery shooting through the doorway to create an interesting lighting pattern in the room.
Looking back into old shots and found this gem. I just love how big her smile is and also, Look at that dress! I love photographing the couple separately before they see each other for the first time that day. Emotions are always high, so it always makes for some fun and interesting photos! What is your favourite part of a wedding day?
I don’t think I ever shared photos from these two lovely ladies portrait session! We headed to Jericho beach in Vancouver during the winter and managed to get some pretty awesome light and city views in the background.
It’s always fun to look at locations and figure out the lines and reflections. Tourists were looking at us and trying to figure out what was going on as I am laying on the Seawall with my head through a bunch of bars on a handrail in a super awkward position! Anything to get the shot I guess! Whats the weirdest thing you have done to get a photo?
This is a popular spot in Vancouver that every wedding photographer goes to. Sometimes I am shooting back to back with another photographer as we simultaneously work with our couples! Although I try and not look at too much work of others so I don’t subconsciously copy, It’s inevitable that I will see some of the same locations in other photographers work. I am in awe at how people shoot this simple spot in so many ways! It is honestly crazy! I am always like “how did I never think of that!” For this shot I thought it would be really cool to have some directional light coming in from one of the openings. The couple just fell into place (probably because they were so stoked to finally have completed the ceremony and all the nerves dropped) 🙂 Whats your favourite shots you have taken or seen from here?
I love trying to guess how a candid photo is going to play out and seeing if it actually happens. This was shot from above stairs over a handrail. Certain things like stairs and doors are pretty easy to predict where someone is going to be, so you can pre plan composition and lighting usually without too many issues. This is one of those shots that are for sure meant to be in black and white. You can really bring the contrast and form with the white dress blasting away from the background. Whats your favourite candid moment to see / shoot?
I guess sometimes windstorms help make better views? Before we moved to Vancouver 10 years ago, apparently there was no view at this location. One of the big winter windstorms took out a bunch of trees and created this pretty spectacular view! Know of any cool spots that windstorms have made better?
We went up to SFU for a rain photoshoot and it was completely foggy! I was pretty happy since haze / fog makes light look dreamy! I used a light behind the couple to add some interest to the scene. What do you think, does the fog add to the photo?
As I mentioned in our previous post - Updating our website comes with lots of looking back into the archives! It's great taking a trip down memory lane and seeing how our style and photos progress. This is one from T+D’s winter wedding where it rained hard all day long. We still managed to get outside for some great shots! I am using a light inside of the umbrella as well as one behind them to make the rain pop! I think this was taken at 1pm… Ahhh Vancouver winters!
While updating my website, I have been looking back at some of the old galleries from a few years ago. There's a lot of great ones that have never seen the light of social media because we got swamped with work. These two came from Calgary and wanted to see some of the best spots in the city, so we took them to some of our classics!
It's a good time to book a winter session now before all the snow is gone! Time is going to pass quickly and before you know it, we will all be jumping into lakes! For this photo we went up to Cypress Mountain and in typical city mountain fashion, it was +1 celcius and doing this gross snow rain. Luckily light makes everything look good and it still looked like snow! We have a few winter sessions currently booked and we are stoked to shoot them! What do you think of winter photos? Do you just hide by the fire all winter or do you go out in any weather type person? We are defintely a dress in Gortex and not worry about it type people!
One from G+J’s country wedding at Hopcott Farms! How picture perfect is this location?!? We just put up an entire set on our blog!
It was the absolutly perfect place and time to... Tie his shoe 🙂
Barn Wedding Venue
“Do you know of a barn venue around Vancouver?” As one of the top questions we are asked repeatedly by brides for over 10 years now, we can now answer it! Hopcott Farms. This new venue is a cute farm (goats included) in Pitt Meadows. It just opened in 2018, and we...
www.willpursell.com This is a candid reflection photo of the bride looking at her dad waiting to take her down the aisle! I saw the reflection and was hoping I could get some good emotion in the photo. She was quite nervous right before this, so the reaction did not make for a good photo. As each bridesmaid got called down I was wondering if I was going to be able to nail out the shot I wanted. When it was her time to go, she got this big beautiful smile as she looked and stepped towards her dad. I am pretty stoked it worked out 🙂
www.willpursell.com Congrats to A+S who are having a baby next month! We photographed A+S’s wedding in 2017, and it was so great to catch up with them! As a wedding photographer, we get to have the unique opportunity to watch as peoples lives grow which is a pretty surreal feeling! As for the location, this waterfall is on the road up to our house so I have obviously been dying to take an awesome couple here for some photos! I love the texture and colour of the rocks. It almost looks like something from Iceland!
www.willpursell.com I had this shot on my bucket list for a few years. I finally had the opportunity to shoot at this spot a few years ago and this is what we ended up with! Even though it looks like the couple are in the middle of nature it was EXTREMELY busy! We had the couple hang out in this location and we waited until we could get a chance to get a photo without anyone in it. I think we had one of the groomsmen ask the crowds of people to hold up for a second as I shot from above. It was a challenge but the reward of the photo was a great pay-off!
Throwback to warmer, sunnier days on destination weddings! Yes, we do the odd destination wedding if its the right place and couple! This was at our favourite destination spot at Grand Palladium Vallarta in Mexico! At the time of this wedding, we had already been to the resort 3 times. We love this resort so much that we have been there 5 times and decided to have our OWN wedding there. With a few inquiries a year for the same place, we are bound to go again for work sometime 🙂 It is not your typical resort. It has a surf break right out front (where you will find me 98% of the time), humpback whales jumping just off the beach (where you will find Lauren attempting to get as close to them as possible), and just in an amazing setting.
Travelling to the wedding with the bride in the morning is sometimes... interesting! I am over 6'3 and 200 lbs, so I don't fit in a lot of cars as it is. Add flowers, bridesmaids, parents and the list goes on, I am usually crammed in so tight I can't even move my shoulders. Add a big camera around my neck and I am pretty much stuck looking forward. I am always looking for cool reflection shots in the small degree of angle I can move. I always kind of get a cool idea and wait for the moment to happen. I knew the Lions Gate crossing into the North Shore was going to be a cool view, so I set it up and waited to see what would happen. The bride caught a glimpse of the venue she was traveling to for the first time and she got that beautiful smile on her face. This one frame was the only time it would have worked where it all came together because we were ACTUALLY moving across the bridge unlike most times 🙂
It’s pretty surreal to be walking down some of the busiest streets in the city and see your photos printed 30 to 40 FEET! For anyone that has been downtown Vancouver / Vancouver city center - during spring - fall, you most likely would have caught a glimpse of two of our photos being featured on billboards, bus shelters, banners and buses! The photos were licensed by London Drugs (a big department store) advertising their professional camera section. It was pretty unreal how many friends, past clients, and photographers messaged us and set us some snaps of buses passing with our photos on it asking, “Are these your photos? I could tell by the style”. It was a pretty surreal moment in our career to work on such a large campaign and stoked to have more in the works. We have more photos of billboards around the city on our blog!
It was the first rainfall warning of 2019 paired with low visability. So when nature gives you a natural fog machine, you use it! I decided to use some funky teal colour on a backlight for this shot, and M+A grabbed their matching colour umbrella! What do you think? Kind of a cool monocromatic feel to the image?
The guys are not always as excited about the photography side of things as the girls on their wedding day. We arrived at the location for the photoshoot, and this was the parking garage. The endless circles down the massive parkade caught my eye even though it didn't look like much without lighting. Once I set up my lighting real quick, I had the groom step in. I showed him the photo on the back of the camera and he was shocked! He said he looked like a King in the photo. Perfect reaction and I won over the groom for the rest of the day!
www.willpursell.com | This shot in particular is quite special to us! It is from R+E's Minter garden wedding that we shot almost 10 years ago! Unfortunately, the venue is no longer around. This happened to be the first wedding we ever did in the RAIN, and it was incredibly dark all day long too. Luckily, the couple were ultra chill and down for whatever we wanted to do. At that point, I realized I had never ACTUALLY taken photos in the rain... EVER! And it's not something you can really go practice with on short notice! I had already worked professionally as a photographer for a few years (mostly action sports work), so I was already super comfortable with lighting. I knew the photos would turn out terrible if we didn't have some sort of interesting light source in the photo. So we just winged it! The fact that we still have shots from their wedding in our portfolio 10 years later is pretty crazy, but there is just something about their day that was magic! We of course just go with whatever mother nature gives us now and sometimes we prefer to shoot in bad weather! What would you do for your wedding on a rainy day?
Capturing some of the amazing candid reactions from clients when they finally feel relieved to get the ceremony out of the way, can create some pretty incredible moments. J+J had their wedding ceremony at the top of Whistler Mountain. It was the beginning summer, but it was still pretty cold at the top and even had a surprise mini snowstorm in the middle of saying their vows!
One of my favourite things is seeing client's reactions when I show them the back of the camera when one of my creative photos work out. This scene: Just a boring wall in front of a busy bus stop, garbage cans everywhere; cold and rainy. I saw some cool lines and used my own lighting to make something interesting. I lit the wall behind them, as well as popped a blue light into some of the rain and fog. M+A were pretty stoked on this shot!
Another year has drawn to a close and it makes us reflect on how awesome 2018 was. We had an amazing wedding season, we got married in Mexico this past March, and we went on a lot of adventures with our clients! First off, we want to thank all our clients for choosing us to be their...
