Vancouver’s Parks & Gardens: Cherry Blossom Paradise
Let me share some of my absolute favourite parks and gardens for capturing stunning cherry blossom photos in Vancouver. These locations offer the perfect backdrop for your portrait, family, engagement, or wedding photography session!
Queen Elizabeth Park
Queen Elizabeth Park is truly a photographer’s dream during cherry blossom season. Perched on the highest point in the city, it offers panoramic views that create a stunning backdrop for your photos. The park features several varieties of cherry trees that bloom at different times between early March and late April, giving us plenty of opportunities to capture that perfect shot.
What I love about Queen Elizabeth Park is how the white and pink hues of the blossoms create an exquisite contrast with the city skyline.
Best spots for cherry blossom photos:
- The slopes on the west side of the park
- Near the park entrance on 33rd Avenue
- Around the Bloedel Conservatory
- The secluded Quarry Garden area
This park is often a venue for Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival events, including a giant pop-up picnic and Spring Lights – a special event where illuminations are projected directly onto the blossoms.
Stanley Park
Stanley Park offers some of the most beautiful cherry blossom displays in Vancouver. The trees here have a special history – the mayors of Kobe and Yokohama gifted several cherry blossom trees to the city in the 1930s, which were planted around the war monument honouring Japanese Canadian troops who served in World War I.

- South Creek Trail near the Rose Garden
- Around Lost Lagoon near Downtown Vancouver
What makes Stanley Park special for photography sessions is the versatility – once we finish with the cherry blossoms, we can easily transition to capturing Coal Harbour or Third Beach as the sun sets.
VanDusen Botanical Garden
VanDusen is a true gem for cherry blossom photography with approximately 100 cherry trees representing 24 different varieties. The garden offers diverse settings that work beautifully for engagement photos, family portraits, or pre-wedding sessions.

- The Great Lawn with beautiful beni shidare (pink weeping) cherry trees
- Hon. David C. Lam Cherry Grove
- The Great White Cherry (Taihaku) with impressive 5 cm blossoms

University & Gardens: UBC’s Cherry Blossom Paradise
If you’re looking for a picturesque setting for your spring photography session, the University of British Columbia campus offers some of the most beautiful cherry blossom displays in the region. As a photographer who’s captured countless engagement and family portraits here, I can tell you that UBC’s blossoms create magical backdrops that my clients absolutely love.
University of British Columbia
The UBC Vancouver campus boasts about 20 varieties of cherry blossoms, with April being prime time to see them in full bloom. What makes UBC special is how the urban / nature setting creates a unique atmosphere for your photos.
Must-visit locations at UBC:
- UBC’s Lower Mall – A beautiful tree-lined street that creates a stunning pink canopy overhead, perfect for romantic strolls and engagement photos
- The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts – Surrounded by some of the prettiest trees on campus
- UBC Rose Garden – Just steps away from the Chan Centre with spectacular mountain and ocean views

Nitobe Memorial Garden

What makes Nitobe special:
- Diverse collection of ornamental cherries including rare varieties like ‘Takasago’ and ‘Taki-nioi’

Burrard SkyTrain Station
This downtown location is one of my favourite urban spots for cherry blossom photography. With 34 Akebono cherry trees surrounding the station, it’s a truly special location right in the heart of the city.
What makes Burrard Station unique:

- The contrast between the delicate pink flowers and city architecture makes for striking photos
- Easy accessibility in downtown Vancouver

The Akebono cherries here typically bloom in early to mid-April, making this a perfect spot to include in your downtown photo session.
Vancouver City Hall

Yew Street in Kitsilano

- The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 28 to April 23, 2025, which generally aligns with peak bloom for many varieties
- Based on expert predictions, peak bloom for most varieties is expected around April 3rd, though this can vary
- Different varieties bloom at different times, providing several weeks of photography opportunities
Bloom Schedule by Variety
To help you plan your perfect photo session, here’s when you can expect different cherry blossom varieties to bloom:
- Whitcomb cherries: The first to bloom in late February to mid-March with deep pink, single-petaled blossoms
- Akebono cherries: Popular light pink blossoms that bloom in late March to early April (these create that classic cotton candy look)
- Kanzan cherries: Deeper pink, double-petaled blossoms that appear in mid to late April

According to the latest cherry scout reports from February 24, 2025, we’ve just come through a cold snap, but most early-blooming ‘Whitcomb’ cherries were still in bud during the freezing temperatures and appear to be developing normally. This is good news for our upcoming 2025 season!
Be prepared to be flexible with your session date, as bloom times can vary based on weather conditions. I always monitor the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival’s “Blooming Now” page for real-time updates from cherry scouts to ensure we capture the blossoms at their peak.
