A Manning Park Ski Resort Wedding Adventure
There are some weddings you get excited to photograph, and then there are the ones that feel like they were made for you. This Manning Park winter wedding at Lightning Lake and Manning Park Resort was exactly that.
When these two first reached out, they asked one simple question: Are you up for an adventure? Their plan was a winter wedding at Manning Park with an outdoor ceremony at Lightning Lake, followed by skiing at the resort for their wedding photos. As avid skiers and experienced mountain wedding photographers, this was completely in our element.
Planning a Manning Park winter wedding
If you are planning a Manning Park winter wedding, flexibility is key. Weather can shift quickly in the mountains, and storms can lead to road closures, power outages, and changing conditions on the hill.
Most couples choose to stay right at Manning Park Resort, so everyone is already on-site if the weather turns. The cabins are awesome places for the guests and wedding parties to rent, and there are also lodge rooms as well. The best is locations like Lightning Lake are just a short drive away when conditions get snowy.
Preparing for a Winter Wedding at Manning Park
About a week before the wedding, we started watching the forecast closely. Heavy snowfall was expected, followed by high winds. In the mountains, that combination can quickly lead to road closures and dangerous travel conditions. We decided to head up early and booked a hotel at Manning Park the night before.
That decision turned out to be the right move. A major storm rolled through, with high winds over 130 km per hour in some areas, bringing down trees, cutting power in surrounding areas, and shutting down Highway 3. Fortunately, Manning Park Resort came through the storm without damage and still had power for their wedding day. We were beyond happy because we were already there, ready for the morning events.

Getting Ready in the Manning Park Cabins
The wedding day started with a welcome surprise after the storm, with blue skies and sunshine. They got ready surrounded by their closest friends and family in the cabins, creating a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. They are also really cute.
For their first look, we found a small clearing in the trees. The groom had cleared a path through the snow to create the perfect spot, with snow-covered branches and a quiet spot without anyone there.
Snowy Ceremony at Lightning Lake
We made our way to Lightning Lake for their ceremony, one of the most iconic locations for a Manning Park wedding. As guests gathered, the snow began to fall lightly. Within minutes, it turned into a full snowstorm.
It was incredible.
They stood together, surrounded by about 20 of their closest friends and family, all bundled up in winter jackets and holding clear umbrellas to protect themselves from blowing snow. Snow fell steadily as they read their personal vows. The emotion was undeniable, especially as the groom fought back tears.
This is what makes a winter wedding at Manning Park so special. You cannot plan moments like this, but when they happen, they are unforgettable. If you love this kind of atmosphere, you can explore more of our winter wedding work here: Winter Weddings
Ski Resort Wedding Photos on the Mountain
After the ceremony, we headed up the mountain for the ski portion of the day. By this point, it was snowing around 10 cm per hour. Fresh powder kept stacking up, but underneath was a firm, icy base from weeks without snowfall. Skiers call this dust on crust, and it can be challenging conditions, especially while carrying camera gear and lighting equipment.
This is where experience really matters.
We skied alongside the couple, stopping at different locations down the mountain to capture a mix of action shots and portraits. Each run gave us something new. By the third run, their friends and family joined in. What followed was easily the biggest group ski we have ever photographed at a wedding. Everyone was laughing, hitting small jumps, spraying snow, and cheering each other on all the way down the run.
The energy was unreal.

Skiing Wedding Photos Until Last Chair
We expected maybe two runs. Instead, we spent about two and a half hours skiing and shooting. They were fully committed, and it paid off in the variety of images we captured. From dynamic skiing shots to more composed portraits, every run added something unique to their wedding gallery.
For the final run, we wanted a more atmospheric setting. Visibility was low and snow was still falling heavily, so we headed into the trees on a black diamond run. Tight lines, steeper terrain, and deep snow created the perfect conditions for dramatic photos. The couple was completely comfortable skiing it, and we followed alongside them, capturing moments as they moved through the terrain.

Why Experience Matters for a Ski Resort Wedding
A ski resort wedding like this is not something you can approach casually. It requires strong skiing ability, adaptability, and the technical skill to shoot in constantly changing light, snowfall, and terrain.
We are not just standing on the sidelines. We are skiing with our couples, carrying gear, setting up lighting on the fly, and capturing real moments as they happen, so your gallery feels like the day actually felt, not a staged version of it.
