TRUST IS EVERYTHING: WHY THIS FRASER VALLEY LAKEFRONT ELOPEMENT WAS DIFFERENT
Sometimes the best elopements happen when couples just trust you completely. That’s exactly what happened with this secluded Fraser Valley lake wedding. They reached out with the simplest brief we’ve ever had: keep it small, just Lauren and me as witnesses, and pick wherever we think would be perfect. No long list of must-haves, no Pinterest boards with impossible location expectations, just total trust in our scouting experience and knowing the Fraser Valley. For couples planning elopements in Vancouver or the surrounding area, this kind of trust makes all the difference. We’ve spent over 17 years photographing weddings in BC, finding hidden gems and scouting locations that work in every weather condition. This lakefront location is one of those spots that just delivers, no matter what nature throws at you.
THE BLACK DRESS THAT BROKE ALL THE RULES
Let me just say: this bride’s black dress was absolutely stunning. Forget the old traditions about white being the only option for weddings. More and more couples are choosing what actually feels like them, and this black gown with delicate floral details was perfect for their intimate lakefront ceremony. It photographed beautifully against the blue water and mountain backdrop, especially during golden hour when the light just wrapped around everything.
If you’re planning your own elopement and wondering about dress choices, go with what makes you feel like yourself. We’ve photographed brides in everything from hiking boots to couture gowns, and honestly, confidence and comfort always photograph better than following someone else’s rulebook.
WHY SECLUDED LAKEFRONT LOCATIONS ARE PERFECT FOR FRASER VALLEY ELOPEMENTS
This particular Fraser Valley lake sits tucked away with massive mountain views and relatively easy beach access. The water is this incredible blue-green colour, and depending on the time of day, you get everything from dramatic blue hour reflections to golden sunset flares. For this elopement, we scouted a secluded section of shoreline where the couple could have total privacy for their ceremony.
What makes lakefront elopements different from other Fraser Valley elopement locations? The variety. You’ve got rocky beaches, forested islands visible across the water, and mountains in every direction. We’ve shot at waterfront locations here in every season, and it never disappoints. The summer and fall months give you warmer temps and longer light, but even winter elopements by the water can be magical with the right layering and maybe a campfire afterwards.
THE CEREMONY: JUST FIVE OF US AND THE MOUNTAINS
The actual ceremony was beautifully simple. No big crowd, no complicated timeline, just the couple, Lauren, me, and their officiant (Vancouver Officiant) on the beach. We set up right at the water’s edge with the lake stretching out behind them and snow-capped mountains in the distance. The handfasting ceremony was a personal touch they wanted, and watching them tie their hands together with that golden hour sun filtering through was one of those perfect photographer moments.
I captured the wide shots showing the full epic landscape while Lauren moved around getting those intimate close-ups of their hands, the rings, and the way they looked at each other during their vows. Having two photographers for elopements might seem like overkill to some people, but when you only get one shot at moments like the first kiss or the ring exchange, having two perspectives means nothing gets missed. It is also needed for the way we use light. See more about how we work as a team in our two photographers examples.
Sometimes couples worry that a small elopement won’t feel “big” enough or won’t have the same emotional weight as a traditional wedding. But honestly, stripping away all the extra stuff often makes it more powerful. This couple was fully present, not worried about guest lists or reception timelines, just focused on each other and the commitment they were making.
GOLDEN HOUR MAGIC AND OFF-CAMERA LIGHTING
One thing we love to plan for with lakefront elopements is golden hour. That last hour before sunset when the light gets soft and warm, and everything just glows. We timed this couple’s ceremony to catch that perfect window, and then after they were officially married, we spent time exploring the beach for portraits.
The technical side: I used two off-camera flashes to balance the bright sunset behind them with the couple in the foreground. Without that extra light, they would have been total silhouettes (which can be cool, and we shot some of those too). But for the main portraits, we wanted to see their faces, their expressions, all those details that make the photos personal. The combination of natural golden hour glow and carefully placed flash gave us that dreamy, romantic look.

FROM SUNSET TO TWILIGHT: STAYING FOR THE BLUE HOUR
Here’s where a lot of photographers pack up and leave, but we’re kind of obsessed with blue hour. After the sun drops below the horizon, you get this brief window where the sky turns deep blue, and everything gets moody and cinematic. We stayed with this couple through that transition, shooting silhouettes on the rocky beach.
The twilight photos ended up being some of their favourites. There’s something about that quiet, end-of-the-day feeling that just hits different. The mountains were silhouettes, the lake was calm and reflective, and the couple could just be themselves without worrying about light or timing. Those are the moments that become the photos you stare at for years.
For couples planning elopements, think about building in extra time after your ceremony. The best images often happen when you’re not rushing to the next thing. Whether it’s a secluded Fraser Valley lake, another waterfront location, or somewhere else in BC, that extra hour of portraits in changing light makes a huge difference.
WHAT COUPLES CAN LEARN FROM THIS LAKEFRONT ELOPEMENT
If there’s one takeaway from this wedding, it’s that simplicity works. This couple trusted us with the location, wore what felt authentic to them, kept their guest list tiny, and stayed present for every moment. The result? Photos and memories that feel genuine.
Here’s what made this elopement so successful:
Trust your photographer’s location knowledge. We’ve been scouting the Fraser Valley and Vancouver for nearly two decades, and that experience means we know where to go for the best light, privacy, and views. If you’re planning an elopement in Vancouver or the surrounding areas, lean on that expertise.
Choose your style over tradition. The black dress, the handfasting, the intimate ceremony with just witnesses, all of it reflected who this couple actually is. Your elopement should feel like you, not like someone else’s idea of what a wedding should be.
Build in time for the unexpected. We had time to explore, to try different spots on the beach, to wait for perfect light. That flexibility is what creates the magic moments you can’t plan for.
Consider two photographers. When your wedding is small and intimate, every single moment matters even more. Having Lauren and me there meant we captured every angle, every emotion, nothing was missed.
Stay for blue hour. Seriously, some of the most epic elopement photos happen after sunset when most people are heading home. If your photographer suggests staying late, do it.
