Quality Photography Experience That Is Different.

A Mount Cheam Wedding With a Surprise Helicopter Adventure

When a couple brings family and friends all the way from the UK to celebrate in British Columbia, you know it is going to be a pretty special day. This Fraser River Lodge wedding in Agassiz had so many things we love: an amazing group of people, a relaxed couple, a beautiful outdoor ceremony with Mount Cheam in the background, a cozy lodge reception, and one very unexpected helicopter landing.

Since guests were flying in from the UK and travelling from within BC, the couple wanted a venue that felt like a true destination wedding experience. They held their wedding on a Thursday, and with friends and family staying on-site, everyone had more time to hang out, catch up, and enjoy being together before the wedding day even began.

A Fraser Valley Wedding Near Harrison Hot Springs

Fraser River Lodge, located about two hours from Vancouver, is a great choice for couples planning an Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, or Fraser Valley wedding. The biggest advantage is that you can do your whole day in one place without it ever feeling limited.

The couple and many of their guests stayed at the lodge, which made everything feel easy and relaxed. Everyone could wake up on-site, get ready, walk to the ceremony, enjoy cocktails and dinner, and celebrate without needing to organize rides between several locations. For guests who wanted to stay nearby, Harrison Hot Springs is also a short drive away, with hotels, motels, restaurants, lakeside walks, and plenty to do before or after the wedding.

For a wedding with guests travelling from the UK, this setup was perfect. It meant less time spent figuring out logistics and more time spent together.

Getting Ready at Fraser River Lodge

Both the bride and groom got ready at the lodge in the morning, using the dedicated getting ready spaces on-site. This is always a huge bonus from a photography perspective because it keeps the morning relaxed and gives us time to capture all the little moments without feeling like we are rushing to the next location.

The bride spent the morning having her hair and makeup done by Beauty by Makayla, surrounded by her family and closest friends. There was such a lovely energy in the room as everyone helped with the final details, chatted, laughed, and got excited for the day ahead. Before leaving for the ceremony, she also shared a really emotional first look with her dad.

Over on the other side of the property, the groom was getting ready with his brother and a very solid group of friends. He had so many good friends that choosing only a few groomsmen did not feel right. Instead, his brother stood beside him as his official groomsman, while all of his friends still got ready together that morning.

We loved that. It felt like such an honest reflection of the couple and the people around them. They wanted everyone to feel included, and the whole day had that kind of welcoming, easygoing energy.

An Outdoor Ceremony With Mount Cheam Views

Fraser River Lodge has one of the best ceremony views in the Fraser Valley. The outdoor wedding ceremony space looks directly toward Mount Cheam, with a completely open and unobstructed mountain backdrop behind the couple.

It is one of those places where you do not need to overcomplicate anything. The view does a lot of the work. Their ceremony was personal, emotional, and full of happy tears, while their guests had this incredible mountain landscape stretching out in front of them.

We were especially happy that the smoke cleared out in time for the wedding. It meant the couple and their guests could finally enjoy the view they had travelled for, and it gave us the clear mountain backdrop we had hoped for in their photos.

A Surprise Helicopter Flight to Mount Cheam

The biggest surprise of the day happened shortly after the ceremony.

The couple had secretly planned a helicopter portrait session with BC Helicopters, and their guests had no idea. Seeing the helicopter come in and land right on the grass at Fraser River Lodge had everyone cheering, watching, and pulling out their phones.
Then the couple climbed aboard with Will and flew to the top of Mount Cheam.

We are no strangers to helicopter elopements and mountain adventures, but having a helicopter portrait session built right into a full wedding day was something we had not experienced before. It made the whole thing feel even more special. One moment, everyone was celebrating together at the lodge, and minutes later the couple was flying above the Fraser Valley toward the top of the mountain.

It was only about a five-minute ride from the lodge to the top of Mount Cheam, but it felt like being transported into a completely different world. Up there, the views went on forever. There were mountain peaks, valleys, open sky, and a feeling of being far away from everything, even though they were just minutes from their reception.

There is something pretty magical about photographing a wedding couple surrounded by an endless mountain landscape. Standing on top of a mountain in a wedding dress is an experience few people ever get to have, and it gave us the chance to create photos that simply would not be possible anywhere else.

They also shared private vows while looking out over the mountains. It was quiet, personal, and such a nice contrast to the excitement of the wedding day below. It gave them a chance to take a breath, be present together, and have a moment that was completely their own.

For couples planning an adventurous mountain wedding, this is such a unique option. Fraser River Lodge is one of the few venues where you can have a helicopter land right at your wedding venue, head into the mountains for portraits and private vows, and still be back in time to celebrate with your guests. It is an incredible fit for couples who love adventure photography and want to add something genuinely unforgettable to their day.

A Warm and Personal Lodge Reception

Back at the lodge, the reception space had been beautifully styled by Valley Weddings & Events and Wild Rabbit Flowers. With Thistle & Thorne Weddings coordinating the day and making sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes, the space was ready for a great dinner, heartfelt speeches, and a packed dance floor kept going by DJ Lucas Pardy.

The built-in twinkle lights at Fraser River Lodge always make the reception space feel warm, welcoming, and ready for a good party. The couple added even more personality with table numbers featuring photos of their beloved cats. It was such a fun detail and had everyone smiling as they found their seats.

The florals from Wild Rabbit Flowers tied everything together beautifully. The arrangements added a soft, natural feel to the space and worked perfectly with the lodge setting and the warm lights.

The speeches were a highlight of the night. They were funny, meaningful, and full of stories from the people who know the couple best. With so many guests having travelled from the UK, it really did feel like a reunion as much as a wedding.

A First Dance With Mount Cheam Behind Them

Their first dance took place on the landing along the stairs, with Mount Cheam visible behind them. It was such a cool and unexpected spot for a first dance, and we loved that they chose something a little different from the usual dance floor setup. It also worked so well because guests could watch from different levels around the space. We are always happy to go with the flow, work with a couple’s vision, and find the best way to make it come to life in photos.

We photographed it from two completely different perspectives. Will was above them, photographing the larger view with the couple, the lodge architecture, and Mount Cheam in the background. I was lower down the stairs, bringing the guests into the frame and capturing their reactions as they watched.

Having both perspectives gave us such a complete story of the moment. We had the big scenic view, but we also had the feeling of the couple being surrounded by all of the people who had travelled so far to be there with them.

Sunset Portraits and an Epic Dance Floor

After dinner and speeches, the party really got going, but we also made time to step outside for one last set of sunset portraits.

Sunset portraits are always one of our favourite parts of a wedding day. Things are a little calmer by then, the couple has had a chance to take everything in, and they get a few minutes together before heading back to their guests. With the smoke cleared and Mount Cheam still visible, it was the perfect way to finish their portraits.

This Fraser River Lodge wedding had everything we love photographing: a relaxed couple, an amazing group of people, family and friends who travelled across the world to celebrate, beautiful details, a mountain ceremony, a helicopter adventure, emotional private vows, great food, heartfelt speeches, and a dance floor that stayed full late into the evening.

It was such a beautiful day from start to finish, and we were so happy the couple got to experience the incredible views that make this Fraser Valley venue so special.

Why We Love Photographing Weddings at Fraser River Lodge

We always love photographing a Fraser River Lodge wedding because it gives couples so many different photo opportunities without making the wedding day feel like one long series of locations and travel time, and it’s also great being a wedding venue with on-site accommodations so you don’t have to travel to the venue on the day of the wedding.

You can start with a relaxed morning in the getting ready spaces, move into an open outdoor wedding ceremony with Mount Cheam behind you, take portraits around the property, enjoy a cozy reception inside the lodge, and finish the night with mountain views at sunset.

For couples who want to add something extra, the helicopter access is hard to beat. Being able to fly from the venue to the top of Mount Cheam for wedding portraits is not something you find at many venues. It gives you an experience you will remember forever, along with photos that feel completely personal to your wedding day.

This couple was so relaxed and fun to be around, which made all of it even better. They trusted the experience, stayed present with their friends and family, and were up for an adventure when the helicopter arrived. That is always a great combination.

If you are planning a Fraser River Lodge wedding, an outdoor wedding in Agassiz, or an adventure-filled Fraser Valley celebration, we would love to hear what you have in mind.
